sesame street is one of the strongest arguments i can think of for the super-advanced species of aliens who are orbiting earth and observing us in order to decide whether or not to destroy our planet to NOT destroy it yet. 

yes, there’s gang rapes and ethnic cleansing and versions of heroin made to appeal to kids. but there’s also sesame street and laughing so hard you cry and pictures of small animals in tea cups. 

so i feel like we’re still at a draw, aliens.

dear everyone,

you guys, love is the only thing that matters. this big, dumb world is so messed up and complicated and confusing. if you are saving your heart, you’re wasting your time here. the only thing that makes all the dumb, awful stuff worth it is loving whole-heartedly and letting ourselves be loved in return.

heartbreak? worth it.

loss? worth it.

rejection? worth it.

i encourage you - no! i IMPLORE you. love recklessly, fully, unabashedly, unapologetically, unconditionally.

we’re all so afraid of getting hurt, or not being loved in return, or not being loved enough. we dole our love out in teeny little increments, like it’s a diminishing resource. god forbid we love people/things to an embarrassing degree. god forbid we let the world see how red our little hearts are. god forbid we love people more than they love us in return. as if the only point of loving is to get something back. 

i’m not encouraging you to debase yourself for love. i’m not saying you should sell yourself out, or abandon yourself, or give away your self-respect. i’m saying love because you want to. make love a way of life because you believe in yourself enough to know you and your heart can handle whatever happens. love because you are precious and letting other people see all of your messy gorgeousness is the greatest way to know you’re alive.

i think we are all capable of handling much more than we think. i’m not suggesting we court heartbreak. i’m not even saying we should let our love guide our actions all the time because hearts are many things but great decision-makers is not always one of those things. i’m saying should stop being afraid of loving too much, because even when it explodes, having let someone into your heart is always worth it. letting ourselves be really seen and being willing to see other people are always, always worth it.
